Rafael Guerrero, 41, and his wife, Alejandra Guerrero, 38, were killed on August 10, when a Dodge Durango driven by a man wanted by Texas police for drunk driving plowed into their Honda Accord while driving close to 100 miles per hour, police reported. In addition to Rafael and Alejandra, the Texas car accident also took the lives of the couple’s 13-year-old son, Luis Angel Guerrero, Alejandra’s brother, 25-year-old Gilberto Ortega Jr., and the driver and passenger of the Dodge Durango. The deadly car accident has left the Guerrero’s two remaining family members, 19-year-old Sebastian Yanez and 16-year-old Daniel Guerrero, without a father, mother and brother.
According to police, the driver of the Durango, 23-year-old Juan Garcia Ahuezoteco, was wanted on a felony DWI warrant and was traveling with his cousin, Alejandro Molina, when the Texas car accident took place. Dickinson police reportedly tried to stop Ahuezoteco’s vehicle at about 8:20 p.m. on August 10, because the Durango was swerving and not using its headlights. However, Ahuezoteco tried to flee and the police gave chase at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour, before Ahuezoteco’s Durango struck a vehicle at the intersection of Deats and Ohio Avenue, fled the scene and then smashed into the Guerrero’s vehicle on eastbound FM 646 in League City.
Concerns have been raised recently about the risks of high-speed police chases, and whether more people are put at risk when officers pursue other vehicles at high speeds. “Nationally, there is a movement to reduce police chases,” said Michel W. Quinn, former Minneapolis police officer and CEO of the International Ethics and Leadership Training Bureau, which trains police officers. “The odds of someone getting killed go up exponentially with speed.” If you have suffered injuries in a Texas car accident, or if you lost a loved one in a fatal collision with an allegedly negligent driver, contact our reputable personal injury attorneys at Bandas Law Firm today to explore your possible compensation options.
